Mr. Skeffington is a 1940 novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. It later became a classic film starring Bette Davis as a beautiful woman whose many suitors, and self-love, distract her from returning the affections of her husband, Job Skeffington. It also makes a point about Skeffington's status as a Jew in 1914 high society and, later, in relation to Nazi Germany.
It stars Claude Rains as Skeffington, along with Walter Abel, George Coulouris and Richard Waring.

She looks at an ill, vain ('though charming) woman approaching her devastating 50th birthday alone, by visiting the cast-off lovers of her sparkling younger years.Only this author can let you see (with brutal honesty) the thoughts & delusions of ALL the characters.
Raw, wise, funny, tragic, uplifting -- always insightful.

Mr Skeffington edition by Elizabeth von Arnim Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I loved the language in this book! The story takes place in Hitler era. English woman recovering from illness dreads her 50th Birthday.A story of looking back upon ones life. This is a slow read, nothing to be gobbled up. I enjoyed the writing.
I'm a big fan but prefer some of her early works. Delivery was prompt and careful. Thank you!
Love this book! I thought I would read this, the classic novel, of the movie I have seen so many times and hold dear to my heart. Of course, there are many different scenes, with characters having different stories...
If interested in novel, and movie (with Bette Davis & Claude Rains), I recommend that you read the novel first. That way, when you see the movie, you can appreciate the differences more, with more empathy for each character . In any event, I still consider it a must read. A look at aging of a beautiful woman, aging and realizing her beauty does not captivate the way it once did.. And the bitterness/pride - then finally, acceptance of how things will now be.
Although the movie based on this book is very good, either the "style of writing" or the story itself doesn't "grab" me in "book version." The best scene I read, however, is between Fannie and the doctor that just "lays her out in lavender"--he tells her exactly what her problems are.
I loved the movie Mr. Skeffington with Bette Davis and Claude Rains so much that I've watched it several times. So I was really looking forward to reading the book.
But sadly I was disappointed. For me the movie was far better than the book. I felt like the two (movie and book) were not even realted. I had a difficult time staying with the book to the end. [...]
I would have enjoyed this book so much more if not for the horrible formatting. On my PW2, strange symbols instead of punctuation or a space appear. On the iPad app, two or more words run together without a space in between. This would be mildly annoying if it occured here and there, but when this pops up several times a page - not worth it, even for $0.99. This edition should be pulled off the site or corrected! Note that this review is only for the $.99 edition, and NOT for the $9.99 Virago press edition, which is recommended as a better choice.
This is an old book and the detail is charming and authentically historical! The author has a light touch. She is quick and easy to read.
She is my favorite fiction writer next to Agatha Christie (but she does not write mysteries).
I've read 4 of her books and they are all pretty different. They are basically romances but not so sappy, silly as pure escapism. I would say they are mostly womens books, but my husband has read several and he loves to read about her references to her little daughters, such as in Solitary Summer and Elizabeth's Garden (both great for gardeners, too}.
This book proves that "Elizabeth" could still mesmerize while telling a tale. She looks at an ill, vain ('though charming) woman approaching her devastating 50th birthday alone, by visiting the cast-off lovers of her sparkling younger years.
